The Art of Living While Being Left Behind, Myanmar မြန်မာ
Winner Best Documentary: Hollywood Art & Movie Awards & Official Selection: Ann Arbor Film Festival
In the heart of Myanmar, three generations of trash entrepreneurs take us into the seemingly bleak world of waste management, with people and places many would rather not think about. Yet, it is in this unsightly place that true beauty is revealed.
When we see trash pickers we mostly see despair, filth and all that is ugly. We look away to sooth our own discomfort. We all just want beauty. Yet when our eyes don’t see, we create social exclusion and exacerbate the stigma that leaves them behind in society. If we brave through our malaise, and really see these men and women, we come to understand that it is the beauty they find in life that inspires us to find beauty in them. This gentle family — and all members of the informal recycling sector in Myanmar — reminds us they are individuals to be seen and not to be left behind.
